The incident occurred in the afternoon when a booby-trapped car detonated near the police patrol in the al-Zera’ee neighborhood in northern Mosul, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Two policemen were among the injured people and one of the patrol vehicles was destroyed in the blast, which caused damages to several nearby buildings, the source said.

Nineveh, and its capital, some 400 km north of Baghdad, is the scene of a major security crackdown carried out by the U.S. and Iraqi security forces to uproot the al-Qaida and other anti-U.S. insurgent groups from the province which is said to be one of the last strongholds of Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.
