Hefty gains in equity markets by early afternoon

Mumbai : Indian equity markets were trading with a hefty gain early Wednesday afternoon, buoyed since morning by the government’s victory in the trust vote the evening before. There was buying interest in banking, capital goods, metal, oil and gas stocks.

At 1:30 p.m., the 30-share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, was at 14,777.53 points, up 673.33 points or 4.77 percent from its closing figure Tuesday. Earlier in the day, it had touched a high of 14,840.80.

At the same time the broader-based S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange was up by 201.05 points or 4.74 percent at 4,441.15.

The market breadth was positive. On BSE, 2,173 shares advanced, 392 declined and 40 remained unchanged.
