Military and security forces otherwise have full control over Yangon where a nightly curfew was still in force, the radio station’s news editor Moe Aye said.

During the curfew, Internet connections with the country seemed to be working better, suggesting that the military were using the Internet overnight, he said.

The station had also received reports, which it had not been able to confirm, that a gunshot was fired early Sunday at the Chinese consulate in Mandalay, the country’s second largest city.

Moe Aye said that this could indicate popular anger with the military leadership and also with China that backs the regime.

“The Burmese people are angry,” Moe Aye said, adding that he feared that Chinese nationals might become “targets” since protests seemed not to sway the military.
