The recovery of the explosives came after a tip-off from a house-owner about his tenants, who had not turned up for days, the police said.

“Today (Tuesday) a landlord from the Mallaguri area, Kancha Maji, informed the police that two of his tenants have not returned home since April 3,” Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling, Rahul Srivastava told IANS.

He said: “Acting on that information, the police started interrogating Dipen Rai, one of the accused in the Siliguri blast case. He also identified the house. Immediately we informed the bomb squad and the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a thorough raid.”

“We recovered about 2.5 kg of highly explosives substance and some important documents from the house that was rented out to Dipen for past few months,” said Srivastava.

He said it has not been confirmed if the explosives were RDX.

Srivastava refused to disclose the name and details of Dipen’s friend who was staying in the house with him.

The police arrested a landlord, Ramapati Sahu, who rented out the house to some students from Sikkim about three months ago.

A powerful explosion that ripped through a house at Champasari area in Siliguri town Thursday killed two people, Likta and Akash Rai, on the spot and seriously injured Dipen Rai.

The police said the victims had connections with the Communist Party of Nepal-Youth League and they were planning massive explosions along the Nepal-Bhutan border and in Siliguri-Doors areas of north Bengal.

“They were from Beladangi and Bhopali camps for Bhutanese refugees in Nepal,” a police official said.

Siliguri, a bustling town under Darjeeling district of West Bengal, is about 600 km from here.
