Isidro Cardenas Moreno, a senior member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was gunned down in Filo Gallineto village in Meta province, the navy said Wednesday.

Cardenas was the head of the finance operations of the group’s 53rd front. The government constituted a taskforce called Omega to launch joint military offensives against the FARC’s central command in the province.

Officials said Cardenas was responsible for obtaining arms and medical supplies, as well as coordinating extortion operations for the group in Villavicencio, the capital of the Meta province.

The leftist guerrilla group was founded in 1964. The group has an estimated 20,000 fighters and is led by septuagenarian founder Manuel Marulanda.

Both the European Union and US have designated the FARC as a terrorist organisation.
