Jayalalithaa asks Mamata for more railway projects

Chennai: With the railway budget to be presented next month in parliament, AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa has written to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for more projects in Tamil Nadu.

In the letter Jan 22 Jayalalitha and her party’s 16 MPs have urged Banerjee to include in the railway budget doubling of railway track (Chennai-Madurai), electrification of entire railway line network, conversion of metre gauge to broad gauge, setting up of coastal railway line between Chennai-Puducherry, building freight corridor, introduction of suburban railway networks in major cities in the state.

The letter was released to the media Wednesday.

Citing the rapid growth of Madurai and Coimbatore, the AIADMK has stressed the importance of having suburban railway network connecting Coimbatore with Erode and Pollachi and Madurai with Virudhunagar and Dindugal.

The party also requested the minister for a feasibility study on freight corridor between Chennai and Coimbatore and requested for a separate freight corridor between Chennai-Mumbai and Chennai-Kolkata.

“Along with this, we request the ministry to sanction another railway line between Avadi-Sriperumbudur,” the letter said.

The main opposition party in Tamil Nadu has requested the railway minister to allocate sufficient funds to complete the Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS) in the state.
