Patna: The tally of successful Muslim candidates in the Bihar Assembly election would have been more than 50 in the 243-member House had the fate gone in their favor. While 19 Muslim candidates got elected to the new Assembly – four more than the last Assembly – a good number of 37 ended at No. 2 position.
Of 37, 9 Muslim candidates were defeated by less than five thousand votes. Among these nine, 3 were defeated with less than 800 votes.
Faraz Fatmi, son of senior RJD leader MAA Fatmi, was the most unfortunate as he lost the seat with just 29 votes. The RJD candidate in Keoti seat in Darbhanga was defeated by Ashok Kumar of BJP.
The Muslim loser with the highest margin was Pervez Ahmed of Congress. He was defeatedwith the margin of 65337 votes in Patna Saheb by state BJP Minister Nand Kishore Yadav.
It is interesting to note that among 37 Muslim runner-ups five are women. While among 19 new Muslim MLAs there are two women – a history in Bihar – the result would have been a big history if these five also had won.
Of the 37 Muslim runner-ups, 15 were defeated by BJP, 14 by JDU, 4 by Independents, and two each by Congress and RJD. Only four of the Muslim runner-ups were defeated by Muslim candidates.
