Speaking to IANS here Saturday, Sonam Lotus, director of the local MET office said: “As the night temperature dropped to minus 5.4 degrees Celsius today, Srinagar witnessed its coldest night of the season so far. During the next few days we are expecting further fall in night temperatures because of the dry weather conditions.”

The minimum temperature dropped to a bone-chilling minus 16.8 degrees in the Leh town of the Ladakh region Saturday. It was minus 9.4 in Gulmarg ski resort and minus 5.4 in Pahalgam tourist resort.

As the cold wave conditions continue across Jammu and Kashmir, the Dal Lake in Srinagar city is also frozen in parts these days.

Boatmen and fishermen have been experiencing problems rowing their boats through the frozen Lake.

A thick film of frost on city roads in the mornings and evenings has resulted in extremely slippery roads. Commuters and motorists prefer to remain indoors till the frost thaws, in feeble winter sunshine.
