“Two militants have been killed in the Zunrishi (Chowkibal) gunfight that started Monday evening and ended Tuesday afternoon,” a senior police officer told IANS. Both were from the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group.

“One junior commissioned officer, and two police constables have also been killed in the operation,” he said.

Three security men and a local woman were injured during the operation, he said, adding the woman suffered a bullet injury in her leg and doctors said she is out of danger.

The search operation in the area was completed Tuesday afternoon.

A joint team of security forces, including the army, the special operations group of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Monday surrounded a house in Zunrishi village of Kupwara, 130 km from here, Monday following intelligence reports that a group of guerrillas was hiding in it.

Police said the guerrillas were asked to surrender, but they resorted to indiscriminate firing at the security personnel.

The security forces then tightened the cordon around the house to prevent the guerrillas from escaping in the darkness.
