State Govt failed to protect people: Assam Minister on BTAD violence

Guwahati: The state government has failed to control the law and order situation in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) in Assam as more bodies were found on Saturday morning in Baksa district taking the death toll to 32. Meanwhile, police has detained 22 people so far in the connection for interrogation.

The bodies of the victims, including four children and two women, were recovered from Khagrabari village under Salbari sub-division adjacent to the Manas National Park, official sources said.

Bodies of two children were identified as Ilina Khatun and Ariful Islam.

Three children, aged between seven and ten years, who were hiding in a forest on the banks of river Beki were also rescued, the sources said. According to villagers in the area there is probability of getting more bodies in the next 24 hours.

Assam border minister Siddique Ahmed who visited the affected people on Friday night said that the state government has failed to protect the people. Ahmed also demanded the arrest of Bodoland People’s Party’s MLA Pramila Rani Brahma for her comment which is suspected to trigger the violence.

“It’s very unfortunate that we have failed to protect the common villagers. We have to shoulder the responsibility for this,” Ahmed said.

He also said that the Congress should break the alliance with BPF for their alleged involvement in the incident.
