The deceased were passengers travelling in a taxi that was crushed under the massive tanker in Mumbai’s twin city, 40 km from here.

The injured trio was rushed to a nearby hospital, the police said.

The accident took place near the Vashi toll check post when scores of vehicles had queued up there. A tanker came at high speed and rammed head on into the taxi in which the three victims were sitting, the police said.

The deceased have been identified as Vijay Kumar, 35, Krishna Kumar, 26, and Dinesh Narayan, 35, all residents of Mumbai.

The impact of the collision was such that three private cars and another taxi waiting in the queue were also damaged, an official from Vashi police station said.

Police suspect that the tanker driver, Nagendraprasad Sitaram Yadav, lost control as he was driving at a high speed on the relatively deserted road.

Yadav, who has been arrested, has told police that the brakes of the tanker failed, leading to the tragedy.
