“Most important is to find the maximum possible unity in the European Union. I think this is what we want to do,” she told journalists here today.

EU Council of foreign ministers is meeting in Brussels today to discuss a common reaction to the declaration of independence by Kosovo from Serbia on Sunday.

Ferrero-Waldner underlined that Kosovo is a “unique case” saying that there was an UNSC resolution 1244 for a long time which provided a basis to determine Kosovo’s future status.

“Kosovo is not a blueprint that can be applied to any other area,” she stressed in reply to a question on the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia which are planning to ask Russia and the U.N. to recognize their independence following the independence declaration by Kosovo.

Russia, a close ally of Serbia, has condemned Kosovo’s declaration of independence as an “illegitimate act” and called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the issue.

“I don’t think it is helpful to link one issue to another. Instead we should find a solution for each and every conflict,” said Ferrero-Waldner.

The Commissioner said the EU has to play a greater role in the resolution of regional conflicts such as in Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transnistria in Moldova.
