Terror attacks on places of worships in India

The trend of bombing places of worship started with Sankat Mochan temple of Varanasi in 2006. Hanuman temple of Jaipur was attacked on Tuesday, busiest day for the temple. Six attacks since March 2006 have targeted 4 Mosques, 2 temple and a graveyard killing at least 78 people and injuring hundreds.

May 13, 2008: Seven medium-intensity bombs places in crowded market place of Jaipur also targeted a Hanuman temple. More than 100 killed.

October 11, 2007: A low intensity explosion kills 3 people gathered to open Ramadan fasts in Ajmer dargah. Being a night of qadar, famous dargah of Khwaja Mohinuddin Chishti had more than the usual number of devotees.

May 18, 2007: 9 people killed in a powerful blast in historic Mecca Masjid of Hyderabad. More than 10,000 were in the Masjid for Juma prayers. 5 more die in subsequent police firing. More than 50 injured in blast and police firing.

September 8, 2006: Juma prayer on Shab-e-Barat day was chosen for a series of explosions. The first explosion was at the entrance of the Noorani Masjid packed with people offering Juma prayers. Other blasts targeted Mushaira Chowk and graveyard, visited by Muslims for Shab-e-Barat. 38 people killed and 200 injured.

April 14, 2006: Two bomb blasts in Jama Masjid in Delhi injured 14 devotees. Two low-intensity explosions occurred as Muslims were preparing for Asr prayers.

March 7, 2006: Two bombs hit Varanasi killing 28 and injuring more than 100. One bomb was placed in Sankat Mochan temple and the second explosion occurred near the railway station. The blast was on Tuesday, one of the heaviest days of traffic.
