The 20-year-old Sania climbed up one place from the last week’s 31st to attain her best ever ranking with 390 points, as per the WTA website.

Her achievement has a lot to do with her recent good performances.

Last week, she reached the quarter-finals of Acura Classic in California where she lost to top seed Maria Sharapova of Russia. Sharapova went on to win the title.

Sania has so far won 172 career singles matches and lost 77.

In doubles play, she has won 113 matches with various partners and lost 54.

The Hyderabad-based Sania, who turned professional in 2003, has $827,476 in career winnings.

Sania is the only Indian woman to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. She achieved that feat in the 2005 Australian Open, but lost to eventual champion Serena Williams in Melbourne.

The same year Sania also reached the US Open fourth round where she was beaten by the top seed Sharapova.
