New Delhi : With the Left parties that support the government from the outside and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clearly in a combative mood over the India-US civil nuclear deal, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi Tuesday indicated that the government was ready for a discussion and vote on it in parliament.
Addressing a press conference ahead of the month-long monsoon session beginning Friday, he said no decision had been taken on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh making a suo moto statement on the issue in parliament.
Dasmunsi said the government would abide by whatever decision the presiding officers of both houses of parliament took on the nature and form of the discussion.
The BJP has given notice in the Lok Sabha for a discussion on the deal under Rule 184, which entails voting.
The Left parties Tuesday asked the government not to proceed further with the nuclear deal and also threatened mass protests and a re-assessment of its relations with the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
