Imam beaten, madrasa structure destroyed in UP

Lucknow: The Imam of Madrasa Taleemul Quran was beaten up and the madrasa building under construction was destroyed by a mob in Haribhanjan village yesterday, according to the reports reaching the state capital today.

Madrasa Taleemul Quran is 20 years old and till now functioning in a kutcha house. Muslims of the area contributed to make it a permanent construction with proper roof.

Yesterday morning a group of people lead by the president of the district Samajawadi Party, Ajay alias Jheenku attacked workers doing the construction including men and women. 85 years old, incharge of the Madrasa, Mohammed Saleem was badly beaten up by this mob.

According to some reliable sources, there was tension in the village linked to the construction and police was deployed there. Mob snatched guns from police and returned only after destroying the madrasa structure that was under construction.

Village Haribhanjan is under block Itwa of Siddharthnagar district. This village has a population of 700 out of which about 5-6% are Muslims.

SSP and DM have now reached the area and have promised to take strict action. Today DIG also went to the village. A report against 45 people including SP leader Ajay alias Jheenku have bee filed. Three police constables have been suspended.

There are unconfirmed reports of damage to ‘Shiv Chabutara’ of the village.

Bordering Nepal, Siddharthnagar is famous for Kapilvastu, where Gautama Budha lived his early years.
