Shahabuddin stuck to his guns for two hours and was finally allowed to use the restroom at the New Delhi railway station, where he took a shower, shaved and changed clothes before heading to parliament.

The MP, dressed in a black shirt and denim pants, started creating trouble for Delhi Police officials as soon as he arrived by the Vaishali Express at 10.20 a.m.

Police sources said he immediately asked police officials to take him to a hotel to “freshen up” after his 18-hour journey. But Delhi Police officials, who took over custody from their Bihar counterparts, rejected his demands.

“We had clear directions to take him straight to parliament to cast his vote,” an exasperated official said.

Two days ago, the Supreme Court allowed him to cast his vote in the vice presidential election.

In May, Shahabuddin was sentenced to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) worker Chhote Lal Gupta in 1999.
