Shoaib faces Pakistan board’s ire after outburst

Lahore : Temperamental fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar is likely to face further punishment from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for his outburst at the board’s headquarters in Gaddafi Stadium here, following the $5,000 fine imposed on him two days earlier.

Shoaib clashed with several PCB board officials Friday over the fine because he felt he wasn’t provided a chance to clarify his position.

PCB announced the fine Wednesday after Shoaib did not turn up Tuesday to clarify why he was absent from the national training camp in Karachi Aug 4.

Shoaib insists that he received the letter for the disciplinary hearing Friday, and not Tuesday as the PCB claims.

PCB’s chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi, however, contradicted this, telling Dawn that he had been in touch with Shoaib earlier.

“Shoaib rang me up and admitted that it was wrong of him not to attend the camp in Karachi and the PCB had rightly imposed a fine on him,” Naghmi told the newspaper.

“He did express annoyance over the manner in which one of the PCB officials had inquired about his whereabouts from his family.”

Naghmi said he would now be looking into the matter personally.

“I will be in Lahore Monday and will inquire from the PCB staff about the Friday’s incident,” he said. “After that, we will then decide on the next course of action.”
