All ministers of Kaczynski’s junior coalition partners – the Samoobrona (Self-Defense) populist farmers’ party and the right-wing Catholic nationalist League of Polish Families (LPR) were removed from their cabinet posts earlier in the day.

“The work of the coalition has ended,” Kaczynski was quoted as saying.

The three-party coalition was facing a three-month crisis following July’s sacking of Polish deputy prime minister Andrezj Lepper who also heads Sambroona.

Lepper has been charged with fraud and corruption.

Meanwhile Sambroona and LPR have agreed to form a new joint party and vowed to continue the government coalition but without Kaczynski as prime minister.

LPR chief Roman Giertych has accused Kaczynski of trying to establish a totalitarian state.

Poland’s next regularly scheduled election were initially scheduled to take place in fall 2009.
