Chahal, however, is unlikely to be released from Patiala prison immediately as another case of disproportionate assets registered by the Punjab vigilance department is still pending against him.

The vigilance department has accused Chahal of amassing wealth and assets beyond his known sources of income. These reportedly run into millions of rupees.

Justice Surya Kant granted bail to Chahal and his son’s father-in-law, Jagdish Singh, in a land grabbing case registered against them in June. The case pertains to Dand village near Ludhiana. Both were also accused of attempt to murder in the same case.

Chahal has been behind bars ever since he returned from Scotland in June and was arrested by the Punjab Police.

While he was Amarinder Singh’s media adviser between 2002-07, Chahal was one of the most powerful persons in the Punjab government.

Amarinder Singh has been openly supporting Chahal even after he was slapped with nearly half a dozen cases by the Punjab Police and its vigilance wing. Other senior Congress leaders, however, have disassociated themselves from Chahal’s activities.
