Ahmedabad : The Congress party Sunday said it would not hesitate in taking action against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in connection with the communal violence of 2002 if the party was voted to power in the assembly polls this month.
The hint of action against Modi came from All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh who said if the party formed the government after the polls, then on the “basis of evidence already there” action would be taken against those involved.
“None will be spared, Modi or anyone else,” Singh told reporters in reply to a query whether the party would proceed against those responsible for the violence.
He was accompanied by state Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki who released the party manifesto here.
Singh said poor people were exploited in 2002 to commit acts of arson and killings and then left in the lurch to face the consequences. He said about 1,500 people were languishing in jail facing prosecution.
Singh charged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for unleashing what he called “Hindu terrorism” which was as unacceptable as “Muslim terrorism”.
Accusing Modi of misleading people, he said the chief minister’s claims of astronomical investment inflows into the state had turned out to be untrue and the actual investment was abysmally low.
The Congress party’s manifesto promises to create ‘new age Gujarat’. It focuses on law and order, agriculture, irrigation, dairy, poultry and fisheries and also underlines the need of rejuvenating education and sports and women’s welfare.
On the industrial front, it manifesto promises to create a fund for restarting closed units and setting up a board for development of the diamond industry.
