Ankara : Betweem 50 to 60 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters have been arrested in an operation by the Turkish army that stretched into northern Iraq on Saturday, in which the army used helicopters and artillery fire, military officials said here in an issued statement.
The army said it used artillery and airstrikes against a group of “50 to 60 terrorists … inside Iraq’s borders” southeast of the Turkish town of Cukurca in Hakkari province in the mountainous Turkey-Iraq border region.
Yesterday, Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his government had given the green light to the army to go after PKK emplacements in northern Iraq. The decision had been made after the parliament approved this military operation last October 17.
