New case of fatal H5N1 avian influenza virus in China – says WHO

Geneva : The World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday that the Ministry of Health in China has reported a new case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The case of a 24-year old male from Jiangsu Province who developed symptoms on 24 November and was hospitalized on 27 November, then died on 2nd December. This case was confirmed by the national laboratory on 2 December as H5N1 avian influenza virus.

There is no initial indication to suggest he had contact with sick birds prior to becoming unwell.

Close contacts have been placed under medical observation and all remain well.

Of the 26 cases confirmed to date in China, 17 have been fatal.
