Colombo : The Asgiriya stadium in Kandy, where Muttiah Muralitharan shattered Shane Warn’e world record of 708 Test wickets, is likely to be renamed after the off-spinner, Sri Lankan Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge said Wednesday.
Lokuge has said he will ask the authorities running the Asgiriya Stadium, which belongs to the Trinity College of Kandy, to rename the ground after Muralitharan, according to reports in Sri Lankan media.
Muralitharan hails from the hill town of Kandy, and interestingly, he claimed his 700th wicket at the same venue against Bangladesh in July.
However, Trinity College vice-principal Gladwyn Kanagasabai said no official request had been received from the government.
Asgiriya, which became a Test venue in 1983, is one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world. It has been carved out from the hillside.
