The notice was issued by a bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and comprising Justices R.V. Ravindran and J.M. Panjal.

The West Bengal government had approached the apex court seeking deletion of strong remarks against it by the Calcutta High Court following a probe by the CBI. It had also challenged the high court ruling directing it to give damages worth Rs.500,000 each to the kin of those killed in the police firing.

At least 14 people were killed in police firing when residents of Nandigram area of West Bengal’s East Midnapore district tried to resist the entry of police to their villages.

The toll in Nandigram has risen to 35 since January this year when the region erupted in violence over a government proposal to acquire farmland for industry.
