ISLAMABAD, Dec 14 (KUNA) — Security across Pakistan has been put on red alert after intelligence reports of possible assassination attempts on President Pervez Musharraf and several opposition leaders and prominent arrests have also been made in this regard, said sources Friday.
The interior ministry issued high security alerts to all four provinces after receiving intelligence reports that five suicide bombers including a female bomber could target any prominent leader including President Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto, ministry sources told KUNA.
Sources said that security has also been beefed up around diplomatic enclaves in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad cities and all vital government buildings.
On Thursday, the security advisor of Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister and chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), said that there were reports of suicide attacks on Benazirs life on Dec 21 and asked the government to provide her security.
Also, sources said further, the Intelligence agencies have foiled a plot to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf in southern Karachi port city, known as hotbed of sectarian violence, and arrested several Al-Qaeda linked suspects in this regard.
Major Asad Ali, a spokesman for the Rangers paramilitary force, confirming the incident to reporters said that the prominent arrests were made two-weeks back in a joint operation by law enforcement agencies.
President Musharraf had earlier narrowly survived four life attempts, one was in Karachi in 2003 and three were in Rawalpindi.
