New Delhi : Sitting in front of a heater, huddling in front of a fire or trying to soak in as much sunshine – the plunging mercury levels to below normal Monday made Delhi residents shiver.
The minimum recorded Monday was 4.6 degrees – three degrees below normal, while the maximum was 21 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal.
On Sunday, the city recorded 4.4 degrees Celsius – the lowest of the season. It was also the coldest Dec 16 in the last five years.
“Icy cold. That’s the term to describe the present weather. Early mornings and evenings are so cold that despite the layers that you wear, the chill reaches your bones!” said Ashmita Sharma, a student of Delhi University.
“It’s too cold for the last two days and we lit a fire in our park to keep ourselves warm early in the morning,” said a motor garage worker in south Delhi.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Tuesday might see a slight rise in the minimum temperature.
“There will be shallow fog in the morning on Tuesday but the minimum will hover around 5 degrees Celsius,” an IMD official told IANS.
“Snowfall in the Himalayan valleys and the north-westerly wind from there is the reason for the current cold spell,” he added.
