Kabul/Berlin : A German convert to Islam was abducted with his Afghan wife and brother-in-law in the west of Afghanistan, Afghan police said Monday.
The trio was seized Saturday in the Gulran district of Herat province, the provincial police chief said.
Germany’s ZDF television channel said the man worked as a carpenter in cooperation with a German relief organization called Green Helmets.
A spokesman for the aid group identified the man as Harald Kleber, a 42-year-old carpenter from the southern German town of Amberg.
It said he was seized by armed men along with his Afghan wife and child while they were on their way to the village of Totechi where the German was overseeing an aid project. He had been living in Afghanistan since 2003.
The abduction comes just over two months after German engineer Rudolf Blechschmidt was released after nearly three months in the hands of Afghan kidnappers.
He was kidnapped July 18 together with another German who later died in captivity.
