New Delhi : Tejas Ravichandran of Tamil Nadu pulled off the biggest upset of the Parsvnath 21st National Under-13 Chess Championship, beating third seed and former World Under-12 champion Narayan Srinath in the third round here Monday.
At the end of the fourth round, Ravichandran shares the lead with four others — Vidit Santosh Gujarathi and Prasanna Rao of Maharashtra, Gahan M.G. of Karnataka and Vishwanath Prasad of Andhra Pradesh. All of them have the maximum possible of four points.
Playing the English Opening with white pieces, Tejas pounced upon the opening mistakes from his more fancied rival and went for an all out attack. In the ensuing long drawn out battle, Tejas earned a full point for after a protracted battle lasting 70 moves.
With the exception of Srinath, all other top seeds maintained their winning streak. Gujarathi and Rao gathered full points in the fourth round. Gujarathi beat his state-mate Sharmili Gagare while Rao overcame Praveen Kumar of Andhra.
The fourth round, however, did not turn out to be a happy outing for the local Delhi lads. Overnight joint leader Vinayak Seth tasted his first defeat of the championship at the hands of Anurag Mhmal of Goa.
The winning streak of Commonwealth gold medallist and local Vaibhav Suri also came to an end after he had to sign a peace treaty with Pranav Shetty of Maharashtra after 30 moves.
World Under-10 bronze medallist Prince Bajaj could not shake off his dull form as he recorded his second draw of the championship. He had to share his points with J.V. Sai Kiran of Andhra Pradesh.
