Madurai : At least three policemen and three Maoist guerrillas were injured Wednesday in an exchange of fire in Varushanadu area of Tamil Nadu’s Theni district, police officials said.`
Police said they found the Maoists moving suspiciously in Varushanadu, about 80 km from here on the Kerala border, and asked them to surrender. However, the guerrillas opened fire and the policemen were forced to retaliate.
Officials said at least five Maoists were arrested and those injured have been taken to the medical college hospital in Theni.
Hospital sources said one of the Maoists was in a serious condition while the injured police personnel were treated as outpatients.
A large police contingent has been stationed in remote areas along the Kerala border following a spurt in Maoist activity in the region.
