The woman, with a 16-year-old daughter and married to a Finnish national who works for a company dealing in machine tools, left a hospital Thursday morning.

She had admitted herself to the private Nanavati Hospital at Vile Parle Tuesday morning after the Monday night incident, Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Ramrao Wagh told IANS.

Police also picked up a person on suspicion and interrogated him but nothing specific came out of it. The police have summoned the woman to get details of the incident.

The 35-year-old, who lives in a suburb in Navi Mumbai, Mumbai’s twin city across the harbour, and has been in India for over a year, was at a hotel in Belapur late Monday. She was there till late but failed to get a taxi to go home.

A private vehicle owner offered her a lift she accepted. He drove her to the isolated and dark area of Parsis Hills where he assaulted and raped her, Wagh said.

Crying, bruised and bleeding, she was found by a police night patrol squad sitting outside a petrol pump. The police team dropped her home.

She declined medical assistance from the police and admitted herself to the Nanavati Hospital, where doctors confirmed assault and rape following which a complaint was registered.

According to Wagh, foreign nationals and visiting tourists must not venture out alone after dark. “They should not take any offer of lift or assistance from unknown persons and must travel in public cabs or buses,” he advised.
