Kolkata : Seven suspected Manipuri militants, including three women, were arrested Thursday in south Kolkata.
“We have arrested seven people, including three women, for possessing an underground northeast militant group’s literature and other incriminating documents,” West Bengal Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told IANS.
The seven people, who are suspected to be members of the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak) separatist group, were arrested from a house at Bapujinagar in Jadavpur police station area in the city’s southern fringe under the South 24 Parganas district.
“We are trying to ascertain their antecedents. Several documents were also seized,” Kanojia said.
The police said a camera and some CDs were also recovered. The arrested seven would be produced in court Friday.
The arrested Manipuris were staying in the Jadavpur house owned by Kartick Chakraborty. He has also been held for interrogation.
While two of the seven arrested were living in the house for the past one year, five others joined them in two days ago.
Claiming to be the “most genuine revolutionary group” in Manipur, the Prepak’s main demand is the expulsion of “outsiders” from the state.
Another separatist group, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Swu- T.Muivah (NSCN-IM), had trained Prepak guerrillas. The NSCN-IM has been engaged in direct peace talks with the central government for the past eight years and has since observed bilateral ceasefire.
The Prepak is also part of the Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF) along with the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
