“There is no fear on the security on the borders with Kuwait, on the contrary the brotherly relations between the two countries are guaranteeing the safety of these borders and, God willing, for ever,” Al-Bayati said.

Al-Bayati was answering a KUNA question about the situation in southern Iraq in general following the British forces’ withdrawal from Basra.

“The borders are safe, the most important thing is the political position of the Iraqi government, and it is positive and friendly towards the government of Kuwait,” he added.

“The danger generated from the former regime (of Saddam Hussein) and its hostile policies against Kuwait.

“But now there is no threat against Kuwait or any of the neighbouring countries, because the policy of the new Iraqi government is to have friendly relations with all neighbouring countries specially Kuwait, which suffered from policies of the former regime,” said Al-Bayati.

The former regime in Baghdad invaded Kuwait in August 1990 and occupied the north Gulf state for seven months before a US-led international coalition in February 1991.
