Baghdad : Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki said during his meeting with Albanian President Bamir Topi here Sunday that Iraq was keen on the security and stability of the Arabian Gulf region.
Al-Maliki asserted the improvement of the security situation in Iraq and urged his guest to reopen Albania Embassy in Baghdad.
He attributed the improvement to the growing strength of the Iraqi police and army forces backed by the Multi-National Forces (MNF) including the Albanian troops.
The Iraqi government is determined to restore the security responsibility from the MNF across Iraq, Al-Maliki pointing out, noting that his government was as keen on the security of its region as on that of Iraq.
For his part, Topi, who is here for an official visit, renewed support for the Iraqi government in its war against terrorism.
Some 150 Albanians soldiers are stationed in north Iraq as part of the MNF.
Meanwhile, the regional government of Kurdistan in northern Iraq is preparing for an international conference here on Jan 27 on genocide in Kurdistan during which a group of Iraqi and foreign researchers and academics would take part.
According to a statement by the regional government, the conference was aimed at gaining international recognition of the Anfal genocide operations and shed light on its different aspects.
“Preparations are underway to hold the conference on the 27 of January to highlight the legal, social, economic and psychological dimensions of the genocide and how to document the Anfal mass killing, conducted at the hands of the deposed Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein against the Kurds in Kurdistan,” the statement said.
“Through this conference we hope that the international community recognizes these crimes,” the statement said.
