Kolkata : As the Narendra Modi juggernaut rolled to a thumping victory in Gujarat, the moribund Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit in West Bengal hopes to rope in Modi for campaign for the panchayat (village council) polls in 2008.
“We might have Narendra Modi for launching of our campaign for the panchayat elections,” state BJP general secretary Rahul Sinha told reporters here Sunday.
“We consider the victory of Narendra Modi as a pointer of the BJP’s fortunes in the next general elections. He countered the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), including Congress, attempting to play the communal card in Gujarat,” Sinha said.
“He is the vikashpurush of Gujarat.”
The BJP is virtually a non-entity in West Bengal politics and even the alliance partner Trinamul Congress dissociated itself from the party in fear of losing its minority vote bank.
The BJP does not have a single representative in the state assembly.
