Mumbai : Three commuters were seriously injured when five bogies of a suburban train derailed in north-east Mumbai Sunday morning. A television news channel reported that one passenger had been killed, but officials could not confirm that.
Divisional Railway Manager, Central Railway (DRM-CR) J.N. Lal said that there was information about one commuter getting killed, but that could not be immediately verified.
Lal told IANS that the slow local train left Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) for its destination Titwala in neighbouring Thane district. The derailment took place at 11.40 a.m. between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations.
“The casualties were not due to derailment. When the train bogies started falling, commuters mistook it for a bomb blast and jumped out of the running train,” Lal said, quoting eyewitness accounts.
The victims have been rushed to the nearby government-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar by Railway Protection Force constables.
