Puri : Orissa sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik Monday claimed that he and his students have created the world’s biggest sand sculpture of Jesus Christ at a beach here.
Patnaik told IANS that he used about 600 tonnes of sand to make the 22 feet high sculpture. It took around 25 hours to complete the image of Jesus in Puri, about 56 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
“I have also used coloured sand to create the images of Santa and Mother Mary holding baby Jesus. Santa is shown sitting in front of Jesus Christ and wishing people ‘Happy Christmas’,” he said Monday.
About 15 students of the Golden Sand Art Institute run by Patnaik assisted him in making the sculpture.
“I had informed the officials of the Limca Book of Records to record this creation as the world’s biggest sand sculpture of Jesus. Its editor has said they would include it in the 2008 edition of the book,” he said.
Sudarsan has participated in more than 34 international sand sculpture championships across the globe and has won many awards.
Last year, he had created the world’s biggest sand Santa Claus at the same beach.
