Guwahati : Four policemen and a civilian were injured in a bomb attack of rebels Tuesday in northeastern India’s restive Assam state, said the police.
The attack near the Khana tea estate close to Sonari, in the eastern Sivasagar district, was probably directed at a senior local police official.
“Four policemen and a civilian were wounded when an improvised explosive device blew up a vehicle in which they were traveling,” a police spokesman said.
The explosion took place soon after the sub-divisional police officer of the area had crossed Khana tea estate.
The area is a stronghold of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
The ULFA, formed in 1979, is fighting for a ‘sovereign, socialist Assam’, and has been engaged in a hit-and-run bush war against government forces.
No one has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack although the police believe the ULFA was behind it.
