Tehran : Iranian Foreign Ministry called legally inadmissible any announcement on the abolition of the 1975 bordering treaty, in response to Iraqi government declarations on that issue.
The spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Seyyed Mohammad Ali Hoseini, said that treaty is for his country the friendship cornerstone and the strength of relations with its neighbouring country, reported IRNA news agency.
Those remarks were made to respond Iraqi President Jalal Talabani who said that pact was signed during the previous government, so the current Cabinet considers it null.
The development and boost of bilateral relations can be defined only in the framework of that work and we hope that the Iraqi government respects the regulations and principles of the international law, said Hoseini.
It is important that Iraq fulfils its commitments with the governments and respects the good neighbourhood, as well as the 8th article of its Constitution, added the spokesman.
Hoseini recalled that relations between the two countries are based on that treaty, which was enforced in June, 1975 and establishes both countries´ international borders.
