New Delhi : Hinting that there would be no role for the monarchy in Nepal's future, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has asked feudal remnants to "vanish within" or "leave" the country before the Constituent Assembly elections on November 22.
"The constituent assembly elections will be a revolution that will lead the country into a new era," Koirala said at a function in Kathmandu announcing the government's annual policy and programmes, PTI reported here.
"The old feudal remnants should either vanish within the country or leave the country before that," he said without naming the King.
Citing the examples of India's independence movement, he said, "As Mahatma Gandhi had announced that the colonial British rulers would help India attain independence by taking to their heels, we are also coming close to something similar."
Koirala's remarks come at a time when diplomats of all major donor countries of Nepal have decided to boycott King Gyanendra's rare Diamond Jubilee birthday party slated for Friday.
Gyanendra was stripped of all powers, including his title as head of the state, after a mass movement toppled his government in April 2006. Since then, rebel Maoists have locked up their weapons and joined the mainstream politics.
Koirala had earlier said that the future of the 239-year-old Shah dynasty must be decided by November's key elections.
