Russia for consensus Kosovo decision

By RIA Novosti

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) : Any decision on Kosovo that is unfavourable to either Belgrade or Pristina will not pass in the UN Security Council, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday ahead of UN Security consultations on the status of the Serbian province.

"Any decision should be approved by all parties involved," Lavrov said. "Any other decision will not pass through the [UN] Security Council."

He said Moscow's stand on the issue is based on international law "and is not dictated by artificial schemes".

The UN Security Council is scheduled to consider two Kosovo plans. Russia proposes further negotiations between the Kosovo capital Pristina – which has been seeking independence – and Belgrade until the two parties reach a compromise and has insisted that security be guaranteed for refugees returning to their homeland.

The other draft resolution on the Serbian province, backed by the US, France and Britain, puts forward the Martti Ahtisaari plan, under which Kosovo will be granted independence after 120 days of negotiations.

The 120-day extension is seen as a compromise between the West and Russia. However, Moscow has rejected the concession, calling it inadmissible.
