New Delhi : The Indian girls’ medley relay team put in a brilliant effort to qualify for the final at the fifth World Youth Athletics Championships at Ostrava, Czech Republic.
According to information reaching here, the team of Nanda Srabani, Shriya Vidwans, Anu Mariam Jose and M.R. Poovamma clocked two minutes 10.53 seconds to finish a close second behind Canada (2:10.13) in the third heat Saturday.
The Indian girls’s time was fifth best among the eight teams finalists.
Medley relay consist of four athletes running 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m respectively.
Srabani started the race well for India and passed the baton to Vidwans after 100m. Vidwans carried on the good work, handing over the baton to Anu Mariam Jose.
The 400m leg was run by Poovamma, who was the first Indian athlete to qualify for a final at the current championships.
She ran a superb lap to pip Barbados’ Griffith Latoya at the finish. However, the team from the Caribbean island also made it to the medal round.
The third heat was the most competitive, because Kazakhstan, which finished fourth, also qualified for the final. The other teams to qualify for the final were Jamaica, Japan, the US and Australia.
