Punjab, NCC sign agreement to give jobs to youth

Chandigarh : The Punjab government Wednesday signed an agreement with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) to tap the national potential of up to 2 million jobs for Punjabi youth.

As part of the agreement, career counselling, skill up-gradation and training sessions will be conducted so that Punjabi youth can successfully compete in the job market.

Private security, detective agencies, business process outsourcing (BPOs) and IT accountancy would be the local target areas for employment generation, a state government spokesman said after a meeting between Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and NCC Director General Parkash S. Chaudhary.

Vice Chancellors of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjabi University, Patiala and Panjab University, Chandigarh have agreed to pool their resources for collaborative enterprises with the state government, the NCC and the recognized private players to create necessary infrastructure for the purpose.

They have also agreed to provide space for setting up training centres for the purpose on their respective campuses. Each centre would be spread over three to four acres.

The spokesman said the state government has also decided in principle to set up an accreditation agency for certification of trained security personnel for placement in the fast expanding corporate sector where their is a huge demand for Punjabi youth.

A committee comprising vice chancellors of the state's three universities and education department officials has been constituted to finalise the modalities for the selection of the sites and course modules to impart training to the youth.

The Punjab government also assured help to promote the NCC among students in educational institutions across Punjab. Badal said that NCC volunteers could play an important role in creating awareness regarding social evils like female foeticide, dowry, and drinking and drugs problem.
