Webcast: the next-gen communication tool

Mumbai : In an effort to cash in on India’s growing Internet broadband applications sector, Citigroup-owned broadband service provider YOU Telecom has launched “webcast” or Internet broadcast, an effective, viewer and user-friendly “one-to-one” communication tool.

“Webcasting as a communication tool is common in developed countries but in India it is still at a nascent stage,” said YOU Telecom CEO E.V.S. Chakravarthy here.

“After several path-breaking communication tools like email, instant messages and blogs, webcast is the latest to join the country’s broadband bandwagon,” Chakravarthy told IANS.

Describing it as the most exciting communication tool in the days to come, Chakravarthy said that webcast being a ‘one to many’ medium, can be applicable to a wide range of organisations/sectors that need to connect many people at a single point such as seminars, annual general meetings or e-learning.

The YOU Telecom CEO said that the company had recently successfully demonstrated and delivered a trouble-free and smooth bandwidth solution to help a Chennai eye hospital at an international event here attended by Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan and several foreign dignitaries.

“To put a successful webcast solution in place, superior infrastructure, technology coupled with proper planning and attention to details are the prerequisites,” he said.

The Surat-based YOU Telecom provides hybrid fibre and coaxial (HFC) network for its broadband connectivity to corporate, small commercial enterprises and individuals across Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad, Vardadora, Rajkot, Vizag and Navi Mumbai where it also plans to provide webcast service.

“YOU has partnered with companies like Cisco, Motorola, Accenture and Commscope to bring to its users a world-class Internet experience,” Chakravarthy said.

Webcasting or Internet broadcasting is a process of capturing, encoding, hosting and delivering multimedia events, such as training, infomercials, concerts, meetings, or conferences, usually from a remote location, for Internet broadcast on a one-time or limited basis.
