The company will go beyond direct selling in six months, Dell India's vice president and general manager Rajan Anandan said.

He was speaking to reporters at Sriperumbudur, the industrial hub about 40 km fm Chennai, after inaugurating the firm's 400,000 per annum plant – its first manufacturing base in south India.

The parent company is also going slow in its new channel strategy even though it sold over 70,000 units through Wal-Mart in two months time, said Kip G. Thompson, vice president (global facilities & strategic growth) of Dell Inc.

The company is choosy in supplying to retail outlets, he added.

In India selling through indirect channels is important for Dell India as it is looking at small and medium enterprises and individual segments for accelerated growth.

Dell India currently has only six percent share in the domestic computer market.

Anadan said the local production would cut the delivery lead time by nearly 50 percent though he declined to quantify the price reduction owing to local manufacturing base.

General manager K.Y. Yong said the Sriperumbudur plant has sufficient space to add more assembly lines and the capacity will be enhanced to 2.5 million units per annum over a period of time.
