New Delhi : Defence Minister A.K. Antony Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security scenario against the backdrop of increased infiltration from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir.
The defence ministry says infiltration attempts in Kashmir soared to 83 in April, a four-fold increase over the same period last year.
In addition, there were also a few infiltration attempts in May and June, the ministry says.
National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan, Cabinet Secretary B.K. Chaturvedi, Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt, Indian Army chief Gen. J.J. Singh, Indian Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta and Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Fali Major also attended the 90-minute meeting.
The meeting is also believed to have discussed Russia's demand for additional funds for a repeat order for Sukhoi SU-30 combat jets and for the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov that is currently being refurbished in Russia ahead of its induction into the Indian Navy.
A high-level delegation led by Russian army chief Gen. Alexi Maslov is currently here on an official visit. Another Russian delegation is expected here later this month for further negotiations on the two contentious issues.
