Ghaziabad : Fourteen people, including two women, were killed and 16 others suffered injuries Friday in a road mishap near this Uttar Pradesh town close to the Indian capital.
Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ajay Shukla announced a compensation of Rs.500,000 for victim's relatives and Rs.50,000 for the injured passengers. He also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The mishap occurred at around 6.30 a.m. when the driver of the Uttar Pradesh State Transport Corp (UPSTC) bus, plying between Hapur and Bulandshahr, lost control and crashed into a tree in Hafizur area, 40 km from here. Around 35 passengers were in the bus when the mishap occurred.
According to police, 10 people died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals and their condition was reported to be critical. Two of them were later shifted to the Meerut Medical College.
Four of the dead have been identified, Shukla told IANS.
