Toronto : An Indo-Canadian is among the nine people awarded the 2007 Civic Awards by the city of Peterborough, Ontario.
Dr. Ramesh C. Makhija was selected for the award, which was given to him Tuesday, for his fundraising efforts in support of the victims of the December 2004 tsunami that hit Southeast Asia.
More than 275,000 people were killed in the 9.1 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean that triggered tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, especially Indonesia.
Makhija is an active member of the local Indo-Canada Association of the Kawarthas, a large recreational region of the area since 1967, and served as director of the Kawartha skill development committee for 10 years. Besides, he was director for the Peterborough Theatre Guild in 2003-04 and of the Peterborough Green-Up in 2006, reported the online edition of Peterborough Examiner.
Makhija and his late wife also opened a walk-in medical clinic in downtown Peterborough.
