New Delhi : An estimated 2.02 million foreign tourists came to India in the first five months of this year, a 12 percent increase over the previous year, the tourism ministry said here Friday.
According to data released by the tourism ministry, a total of 2,027,019 tourists arrived in the country between January and May. The corresponding figure for last year was 1,810,584.
Foreign exchange earnings from tourism also showed a growth from Rs.115.93 billion in 2006 to Rs.133.02 billion during the last five months, recording a 14.7 percent increase.
According to the ministry, foreign exchange earned in terms of US dollars was 17.4 percent more at $3.07 billion against $2.6 billion registered for the corresponding months in 2006.
