An army spokesman said that the 82mm mortar was complete with a tripod and telescope. It was part of a cache of arms, including claymore mines, detonators and grenades, recovered from Nanvi forest in Rajouri.

The mortar is categorised as part of light artillery. "Only three to four such mortars must have been recovered in the 16 years' history of militancy in the state," said the spokesman.

The weapons were buried in a wooden box in the forest.
